History
Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started during 1919. The company was first established by Anton Raky, an engineer. Raky was a pioneer in modern drilling and oil drilling technology. The first company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
In the year 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for making drilling equipment. During the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Immediately after, Peiner was developed into an international brand in the succeeding years. Currently, SMAG is the market leader in the world, using grabs for worldwide cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
