There are 7 various classes of forklifts as determined by the ITA or Industrial Truck Association. These categories are divided into the kind of work setting; rough or smooth surfaces, indoors, outdoors and narrow aisle; by the type of engine; whether the operator is sitting down or standing; and lastly the machine characteristics, regarding the maximum grade and kind of tire. Some of the classes are further sub-divided by operating characteristics. Below are the following lift truck classifications:
Class 1 Forklifts: these machinery comprise electric motor trucks which use either air filled or pneumatic tires or cushion tires. The Class 1 lift trucks also consist of 4 lift codes, or subcategories which are:
Lift Code 1: Stand-up, counterbalanced rider unit.
Lift Code 4: 3-Wheel electric sit-down types.
Lift Code 5: Counterbalanced rider, cushion tire sit down tires.
Lift Code 6: This grouping included pneumatic tire models, counterbalanced rider, and sit-down rider units.
Class 2 Forklifts: Class 2 forklifts consist of narrow aisle electric trucks with solid tires.
Class 3 Forklifts: The class 3 lift truck would consist of all hand/rider trucks fuel and electric based with solid tires.
Class 4 Forklifts: The IC or internal combustion models make up Class 4 forklifts. These are sit down rider forklifts with cushion tires. Generally, they are suitable for use on hard surfaces and indoor use.
Category 5 Forklifts: Class 5 is Internal Combustion Engine sit down rider units outfitted with pneumatic tires. Usually, these units are great for working on rough surfaces outdoors or on areas with significant inclines.
Category 6 Forklifts: The Class 6 forklifts are either IC powered or electric models. These ride-on models can tow at least 1000 pounds. This class is designed and engineered to tow cargo rather than lift it.
Class 7 Forklifts: Class 7 just included rough terrain models with pneumatic tires. The Category 7 forklifts are almost exclusively used outdoors and powered by diesel engines.
The different classifications of lift trucks help to keep them separated and organized. Various kinds of working atmospheres rely on different classifications in order to get their work completed. Forklifts are rather particular in their loading and lifting capacities. Their various kinds of tires and engines are made for specific operation.
