A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery which is quite like a forklift. It enables the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These machines are mostly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are used for transporting pallets and completing specific jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be raised to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials needed, are situated on a shelf which the operator could not reach, then entire platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some businesses might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be utilized to finish these particular jobs at some companies instead.
