Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Made for construction locations, where materials should be moved on surfaces which are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The safe and proper use of rough terrain forklifts is very important to guarantee the wellbeing of both the operator and other workers at the work site.
Terrain
These trucks are made for rough terrain, but care should still be taken in order to avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, must just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Even though there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations governing forklift speed restrictions, forklift operators must drive at a safe speed at all times. Driving on terrain that is rough or uneven needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, can be unsafe at faster speeds.
Incline
Keep the load on the uphill side of the machinery if operating on a slope. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Do not try to raise a load when operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machinery to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Make sure that the overhead guard is securely in place. Depending on the working surroundings, eye and hearing protection may need to be worn. Make certain that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift could be affected by weather conditions. Turning, load handling and speed may need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in rain, snow or ice.
